60 seconds with… Laetitia Wajnapel

Among the top fashion bloggers in the UK, Laetitia Wajnapel is a Paris-born, London-based journalist, social media consultant and stylist in addition to being the face behind Mademoiselle Robot. Here, she tells Claudia Wünsch Communication about her style, inspiration, and favourite fellow bloggers.
What inspired you to start a fashion blog?
I was on maternity leave with a really well behaved newborn baby so I thought it was a good time to get back to writing regularly.
How has fashion blogging evolved since you launched Mademoiselle Robot?
For one thing, there are now loads of blogs. When I started in 2007 there weren’t as many of us and in some ways, it was more “funâ€. It was just more innocent I suppose. Now, everyone seems to have a blog. It is a bit like having a Facebook account, so it is harder to find compelling content to read.
How would you compare fashion blogging to fashion journalism?
They aren’t really comparable… They both have different purposes I think. Blogging is more personal, there isn’t always an angle, there isn’t always a story, and it is more about personal style journeys. Of course, this is a generalization and there are also some blogs that have a fairly journalistic approach. I prefer the ones that are more personal. If I want to read something written by a fashion journalist, I will pick up a fashion mag.
You have lived in Paris and London…how would you compare the styles of these two cities?
London and Paris are completely different. While Paris is quite chic and conservative, London is eccentric and unique. I like a mix of both.
How would you describe your personal style?
I mostly dress quite preppy but in a very girly way. I look to the past a lot for inspiration and I like to mix and match vintage and modern.
What is your favourite decade in fashion?
It changes all the time! At the moment I’d say the late 60s.
What is your favourite vintage piece in your wardrobe?
Again, that changes quite often, but right now it is a pink pleated dress. I can’t stop wearing it, especially with kimonos, which is another of my current obsessions.
The best place for vintage shopping in London?
I am not a big fan of vintage shopping in London, I prefer to gather vintage pieces when I travel or online. If I do go looking for vintage in London, I tend to wander around Brick Lane (This Shop Rocks) or Kingly Court (Marshmallow Mountain).
Who is your favourite emerging designer?
I love Vivetta (Vivi Ponti). She makes very whimsical dresses with a slightly punk twist. She is not totally new to the scene though as she’s been designing for a few seasons now and is pretty successful.
The most timeless designer?
To state the obvious, I am going to say Chanel.
What is on your wishlist for summer?
Not much really. A few accessories, maybe a big floppy hat… I have most of the clothes I want for the summer. Pretty boring answer, right?
What are your top 3 fashion blogs?
Vagabondiana, July Stars and Liebe Marlene are three of my faves.
Who is your favourite blogger you have met personally?
Jaja from July Stars. We started talking through our blogs a few years back and we became good friends.
What is the most memorable fashion show you have attended?
Manish Arora a couple of years ago, the collection was incredible.
Describe your favourite pair of shoes.
My current favourites are floral T-bars from Opening Ceremony, very high but very comfy and for the daytime I can’t go anywhere without a pair of Minnetonka loafers.
Do you prefer online or “real-life†shopping?
Online! I really don’t like going into shops, I find it soul-destroying unless it is well curated little boutiques. I much prefer shopping online. Generally I just place a really large order, try everything on and just return what I don’t like.
What importance do social networks have for you?
Since a lot of my friends are in Paris and in the rest of the world, social networks are really important to stay in touch on a day-to-day basis. As far as the blog goes, twitter and Facebook especially are a great way to communicate with my readers.
What is the difference between style and fashion?
Style is personal and unique; Fashion is universal.
What advice do you have for new bloggers?
Leave your agenda at the door, only do this for the right reasons… and be yourself.
What are your future plans for your blog?
I am not a planner, so I am not sure. I am working on a book at the moment and hoping to further develop the menswear section.
Tic tac…60 seconds are up! Thank you, Laetitia!
